Wetland Conservation in Ireland: a workshop organised by the Biochange Project January 8th, 2010 in Trinity College Dublin.
On January 8th 2010 approximately 40 people, all with an interest and experience in some aspect of wetland conservation, braved the icy road conditions to attend a one-day workshop on wetland conservation in Ireland. Natura Environmental Consultants were represented by our experienced botanist and wetland specialist Katharine Duff.
The workshop comprised a series of short talks by speakers from Bord na Mona, Irish Peatland Conservation Council (IPCC),Trinity College Dublin (TCD),University College Cork (UCC) and University College Dublin (UCD). The talks covered a variety of topics including conservation of peatlands, turloughs, ponds, syrphid flies and undesignated wetland sites. While it seems that designation is desirable it is certainly not the only answer to wetland conservation as many of the good examples of wetland sites remaining in Ireland are undesignated. The National Botanic Gardens spoke about a pilot scheme they are about to launch with Teagasc, to engage farmers in the awareness of important areas of plant diversity on their land and how to manage them for conservation. The local authority and Northern Ireland perspective were given in two talks from Monaghan County Council and the Northern Ireland Environment Agency(NIEA). The day finished with a structured discussion to raise issues and also ways to promote wetland conservation. Natura Environmental Consultants has many years of experience of wetland surveys and their conservation and can be contacted for these services by emailing
