Natura Environmental Consultants carry out bird surveys regularly for a variety of purposes. These include: • Breeding bird surveys (normally from April to July); • Wintering bird surveys (normally from September to March); • Seabirds-at-sea (all year but optimum in summer months); • Single species surveys (Red Grouse, Hen Harrier, Kingfisher, etc); • Nighttime surveys using specialist night vision optics.
With a combination of 40 years experience in bird survey work, the Natura team can design and undertake any assessment of bird populations in a development area. The fieldwork is carried out to the highest international standards backed up by high quality digital mapping of results.
Some examples of the types of development that require detailed bird survey and evaluation are: • Wind energy projects in uplands and on the coast; • Port development and coastal protection; • Dredging of harbours and bays; • Aquaculture licences in estuarine areas; • Electricity transmission lines through sensitive habitats; • Management plans for protected areas.
We have prepared for the National Parks and Wildlife Service, a Conservation Management Plan for the Skelligs Special Protection Area (SPA). This involved a review of several decades of population data on the qualifying bird species in this major seabird colony.
