Natura Environmental Consultants undertake a range of different surveys including Habitat and botanical surveys. A brief description of what these surveys entail is outlined below.

Habitat Surveys

Habitat surveys are undertaken by ecologists to establish the type of habitat, the environment in which an animal or plant lives or grows. The habitats are classified according to a standarizied system appropriate to the study. In Ireland habitats are primarily classified according to A Guide to Habitats in Ireland. Other classification systems include the JNCC Phase 1 and Phase 2 National Vegetation Classification (NVC).

A typical habitat survey identifies the dominant habitat types within the study area and assigns the classification codes and associated mapping symbols. The dominant plant species within each habitat type are also recorded and is particularly useful in identifying the less common habitats.
