Terns gather in Dublin Bay

The annual gathering of terns in Dublin Bay is underway with over 6,000 birds recorded in huge flocks at the end of August.  The flocks of seabirds appear at dusk on Sandymount and Merrion Strand massing together for safety on the sandbars near the tideline.  They include several species of terns and are thought to come from breeding colonies around the Irish Sea and perhaps further afield.  Dublin Bay acts like a motorway service station for these migratory birds as they fuel up with high protein fish before their long journeys to African wintering grounds.  Natura is assisting BirdWatch Ireland in monitoring Dublin Bay Birds, with support from Dublin Port Company.
